I reserved a name on the CIPC website for a small home based company I want to run in my spare time fixing computers. How do I register the the reserved name so I can apply at suppliers for an account. The people at CIPC said I must register a defensive name. Is this correct?

The advice you were given is correct.
You now have to wait for your reservation to be approved. Once it is approved you register it and will in due course receive a document attesting to it.
This whole process is supposed to take 3 days. However, something in their system broke and doing the checks manually is not an option in their very busy lives.
Here is their notification of their position. I am waiting since 26th April for approval of names reserved... -
Thank you clive-triangle. The name reservation is were approved in march 2013, so that's ok. I were just wondering about the defensive name because last i applied at a supplier they denied my application because I weren't registered. I understand that I need to re-register my defensive name every 2 years?Comment

If you have received a CoR 10.1, you need to now register it on the site. Once they have done their thing, they will issue you with a CoR 9.4. Only then is it registered in your name. The two years starts from that date.Comment
