    Newsletter Mailing Script

Any suggestions for a low cost (no cost) high performance newsletter mailing script. I had one years ago which allowed visitors to opt in and select the topics they wanted. Worked like a dream.

Mailchimp is free, I find it very user friendly - http://mailchimp.com/

Installed and working well so far. Any suggestions for a script that allows one to manage detail fields in a customer database? Ideally one wants to have the two functions in one application.

            From the phpList features page:

Subscriber Attributes like 'name', 'country', and other personal information, are completely customizable. You can specify what information you need to get from users when they subscribe.
User Specific Content. You can use Subscriber Attributes in message content to make each and every email message personalized with the subscribers name, country, or any other attribute.
BTW - Mailchimp is pretty good too, but once your mail list is past 2000 subscribers it does start costing money. No train smash if you're mailing for commercial reasons, but certainly a problem for non/low profit causes.
