In short, without going into much detail, yes, an e-mail sent via Gmail can be traced, but it is not that easy to obtain ownership information by yourself. Firstly, the header information of the e-mail (if not forged) can identify the originating IP address of the person who sent it. In this case, you can identify the network from which the email was sent. Then you will need to obtain information from the network on whom the IP address was assigned to. Often, it is only the police by means of a section 205 subpoena that can get this information, unless you have access to a source inside the network.
If the headers are forged, a little investigation will be required, but sometimes, in these events, you cannot trace the sender of the email.
Here you can find information on how to get the Header information - https://support.google.com/mail/answer/22454?hl=en
1. Log in to Gmail
2. Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
3. Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top of the message pane.
4. Select Show Original.
The full headers will appear in a new window.
Click the drop down option next to the reply button and select 'show original', this will reveal the entire message including the header which contains IP information.
