    Good find.

I don't know what this one means...
PageRank is vanity, ranking is sanity.
Can any of you boffin's on this stuff tell me, cause I was under the impression that a higher page ranking set you up higher in the rankings. This seems to say the opposite and that page rankings do not matter.

I think the golf equivalent would be "You drive for show and putt for dough." SERPs (search engine result pages) and organic search traffic volume are more important indicators of success than Pagerank.

There have been a number of studies on SERPs that have shown that when you scan down a page of results, the listing is far from in Pagerank order. Google says that Pagerank is but one of over 200 factors in their search ranking algorithm.

Wikipedia has a fairly detailed page explaining Pagerank here.

Thanks for that. Pagerank is still important, is it not? It seems to be weighted high up on the list of 200 factors in determining where your position will be - at least this seems to be the impression that everybody has.

I get emails daily requesting reciprocal linking to other sites. Everybody has this BS page or lists of links and resources on their site that is useless to most but supposedly helps with this ranking. The higher your rank the more the requests come because they want to attach themselves in order to boost their own ratings.

How does one find out where you are in the SERPs ratings?

Not nearly as important as getting keywords and phrases in the right places. Those "right places" are the page title, H2 and H3 headers, in the anchor text of internal and external links to the page, in the page description, and from time to time in the ordinary text content.

Pagerank gives an indication of how many links of Pagerank value are pointing to a page. It doesn't indicate what those links are saying about the content of that page, and how relevant that content might be relative to the particular search term the Googler might have entered for the search.

The tough way is to do searches on keywords and phrases that you hope a prospect would use, and then scan down the results to see if and/or where your website comes up. The easier way is to use Google Webmaster Tools. You register and claim your website by placing a file or code snippet on your website. Google will then give you all sorts of search and crawl related information, including the top 20 search terms that are sending traffic your way and what your SERP postition is on average for each term.
