Your PC is busy downloading a virus - phone call

I don't know if this has hit South Africa yet, but the latest is that you get a phone call telling you they are from Microsoft or some other call centre and that they can see your PC is busy downloading a virus. They want you to let them take over your PC remotely so they can fix the problem for you.

They are apparently pushy and aggressive if you question them in any way. I wonder how many people they are going to catch like this?

This scam or very similar ones have been around a long time and it doesn't end well for any unwitting victim that gets snared.

Giving someone remote access to your computer is not a good idea. They'll steal all your login-names and passwords, they'll tamper with your anti-virus and install rootkits and trojans to maintain control and monitor your pc usage, they'll steal your documents, your address book, and your identity and they'll do this to all the other pc's on your network........like I said it's not a good idea.

Yep, with your battedotnet login details your warcraft items will get sold on E-Bay. This could be more distressing than your emptied bank account for some poor souls.
