I've also come across failed resin joints that I've cut open and seen crimped ferrules with the conductors pushed in from either side and overlapping right through the ferrule.

I don't think this would be acceptable practice unless the ferrule maunfacturers state it is. The obvious thing that springs to mind is that ferrule sizes would be incorrect for the CSA of wire inside them if you do it that way. For example if you overlap two 2.5 mm˛ wires the ferrule would need to be 5mm˛ to accomodate them....there's no such thing as a 5mm˛ ferrule, you'd have to use a 6mm˛ which would be a loose fit with 20% too much air space inside or give the wires a haircut and use a 4mm˛ ferrule. Likewise if you had 2x 10mm˛ conductors you'd need to use a 25mm˛ ferrule which would also be way too loose.

Soldering ferrules and lugs is something I was taught to do 35 years ago as an apprentice but nowadays it's not considered best practice and expressly forbidden in some contract technical specs and by some manufacturers.

i did a project a while back (couple years ago) and questioned joints in the trunking...at that point i was told ...so long as the trunking has enough to do the joint in the trunking it is allowed...i cant remember the percentage of space (I think it was 30 %...but i stand to be corrected.
