    Question VAT on building levies?

    Hello,

The company I work for owns a portfolio of properties. One of the properties belongs to a body corporate. I'm entering a supplier invoice for an invoice which I have just recieved from this body corporate. I can obviously not claim VAT on the charge for electricity. But what about the maintenance levy, can I claim vat on that?

Surely one issue is "is the expense incurred in the course of generating VATable income?"

I ask because I confess I'm confused by this statement -

I seem to be missing the obvious. My municipality certainly raises VAT on the electrical supply to my business, and I claim it as input VAT. Why can't you claim the VAT?

Is the body corporate a registered VAT vendor that is raising VAT on their invoice?
