Thumbs down Prepaid electricity meter - Pretoria

Can somebody help or refer me to someone who can install a main electricity prepaid meter in Pretoria? I contacted Electrovend and www.pre-paidmeters.co.za.

Electrovend no go because the install a submeter and you need to buy tokens from them.

The other company charges R 2 650-00 for a main meter and because I need to pay about R 2600-00 to get the tenants electricity up to date it is getting a bit steep.

    Hi Chrismine,

You have no option but ensure the account is up to date before the City Council will allow you to install a prepaid meter.

    Chrismine,

Why do you not go the Electrovend route and force your tenant to buy the tokens from them. At least you know the electricity is being paid for. At your own time you then settle the arrears account with the council ?

Oh boy, what a country. Each monkeypality does it's own thing. Here they are only too glad to let you put in a prepaid meter, especially if you have arrears, because then they just take off 60% each time you recharge untill the arrears amount is paid up.

Martinco - I don't mind buggering around this tenant but the next one may be a nice old lady that does not know Internet or a cellphone. How Electrovend work is that you make a payment into their account and then fax or mail them proof of payment. They then send you a SMS with the "codes" that need to be typed in. It can only be done during office hours. Here in George one can buy electricity at lots of garages or cafe's until closing time.

My deduction is that the council will not let you install a prepaid meter until the account is settled. I can settle the account and try to recoup it from the tenant but according to the lawyer he may or may not pay it.

I myself have a prepaid meter in our flat and I like it alot as I hate it to deal with the poeple at the municipality....

I am able to assist with the installation of pre paid meters in the City of Tshwane district. It's true what Justloadit said, you will have to do a final payment on your electrcity bill to clear any outstanding balance before you can have a pre paid meter installed. If you would like a quote, please feel free to contact me on sales@prepaidmeters4u.co.za. Once installed you can purchase electricity from www.prepaid24xtreme.co.za or any shop or garage that sell electricity.

    Thank you

    Chrismine,

To apply from the City of Tshwane will be a better and cheaper option.

    • The customer must have a valid contract account with CoT. Electricity included.
    • Contract account must be up to date. If in arrears, the full outstanding amount must be paid or he/she must make arrangements with CoT.
    • To change over from a conventional meter connection to prepaid the costs are R1368.00
    • The customer must take with a latest service account and identity document when apply for a prepaid meter.
