If facebook is not used in business purpose then you have right to block it. You are the company owner and employees are paid to do work!

I use http://www.facebooklimiter.com to block it on specific times so it is left accessible on breaks. I had no problem with negative reactions of empoyees.

Makes note to self - the OP and larko both share the same IP address (which is not in South Africa).

Worked out as on-topic in the end, so no big deal. The only reason I raise it is so that members know larko's post probably shouldn't be taken as an independant third party endorsement.

If I may, blocking can be easily done with local policies on the systems or just if you have a domain controller it will be very simple to enforce. That said I would rather invoke a company policy and give it for all the workers to sign. On this policy you state that face-book can be accessed during lunch time. The penalty would be blocking it completely if they don’t comply. That way you gave it a fair chance.

Just for interest sake there are 2 approaches to social network marketing. One is that you have an individual or department able to promote your company on social network and a second, more recent approach is that all staff are given policies and guidelines regarding promoting the business /brand on social networks...each one being an potential ambassador. So given the second options approach, what we look for or change regarding facebook?

    Hi

I understand the dilemma you are facing. Its difficult because time is money and you are paying them to work when they are in the office, but you also don't want to create a negative and uncomfortable environment because that too will hamper productivity. If you block access to social media websites, they will probably still access them through their phones. So I would suggest that you sit down with them and voice your concerns. Explain to them that you see them as responsible adults, you treat them as responsible adults and you're expecting them to behave as responsible adults and ultimately work to give you their salaries worth.
