Growth is determined by cash flow...like every other aspect of business...you can dream big ...but without the key ingredient "cash flow"...it is just a dream.

focus on investment and capital...then grow accordingly ...the rest will fall into place.

"Get going. Move forward. Aim high. Plan a takeoff. Don't just sit on the runway and hope someone will
come along and push the airplane. It simply won't happen. Change your attitude and gain some altitude.
Believe me, you'll love it up here". [Donald Trump]

Dont have my own business anymore (still fascinating topic) but logically it makes sense to learn from large business, not small business. Think big like the Donald (with cashflow) and an actual plan to get from A to B. Most businesses start small and stay there because they haven't developed an effective business growth strategy and systems to guide them through periods of expansion. I dont see lots of books out there on how to run a big company. I think you can only study the companies who had done it yourself to see if you can learn their lessons. Strategic planning to get the A to B is usually, unfortunately too time-consuming and labor-intensive. But there are new methods to keep it simple and fast like "rapid enterprise development", "draft a new strategic plan in just 48 hours" (example www.keithrmcfarland.com).

I also agree with Ian on cash flow, which is the essential fuel for your business. Without cash you cannot buy materials or pay for essentials. However, as I have indicated in another post, the marketing guru, Peter Drucker said:"Because the purpose of the business is to create a customer, the business has two - and only two basic functions: Marketing and innovation."

You need to identify your market and then tell them about it (see quote above). Without customers you are nothing. You also have to be innovative to stand out from the crowd and not be a "Me too" business.
Excellence is not a skill; its an attitude...
