    Netcare

Johannesburg - Netcare [JSE:NTC] in KwaZulu-Natal was fined R4m by the Commercial Crimes Court after it pleaded guilty on charges of illegal kidney transplants at its St Augustine Hospital in Durban, the SABC reported on Tuesday.

The hospital faced 100 counts in three main charges including that the hospital's staff had illegally acquired kidneys between 2001 and November 2003.

It was also charged with performing transplants in which five of the suppliers were minors and also receiving payments for the operations.

The court also granted a R3.8m confiscation order against the company in light of the profit made from the transplants, the SABC reported.

So if I've got this straight, Netcare performed 22 million Rands worth of illegal kidney transplant operations in a Durban hospital, mostly on Israeli patients using kidneys purchased from poverty stricken Brazilians.

I swear you couldn't make up a story like this. Absolutely bizarre.

This will make a good plot for a soapy or even for CSI NY. ( CSI KZN ? )
    Shocking !!!
It seems as though the medical industry is playing catchup with the government !

What made me laugh is the Netcare management denying all knowledge of wrongdoing. 22 million Rands worth of business and nobody had the foggiest idea what was afoot. Yeah....right.

And apparently they've paid the fine. Business Report had a copy of the cheque on front page.

Doesn't surprise me, they just want this to go away with no further digging by the authorities or repercussions I'm sure.

To be fair, the hospital money was as per notmal billing. The payoffs for the purchase of kidneys was a seperate issue. ALso remember the hospital would bill for the stayover and facilities while the doctor bills directly to patient.
The real villians are the doctors. They are all specialists and probably make R250 000 per month yet still resort to this nonsense and taking advantage of people for their own greed.
