If it is from Matrix it is probably a Samsung... and yes I do have one and I do use it... So not happy about the possibility of a 1Tb turning into a 32Mb but it is worth testing. But I am really surprised that Matrix swapped out anything because it normally takes about 120 days for them to do anything or so is my experience with them.

    External or internal ?
The externals I have seen comes preloaded with backup software and I wonder if it has something to do with the partitioning ?

I do know that the Matrix store in our aria only sell the HDD and external chassis and you do the assembly yourself. But I have been wrong before. It is really scary to think that any software can actually destroy a storage device to start with.

But we will have to see if it was indeed a preassembled external HDD or not.

What laptop is it? It might pay you to check the manufacturers site, my laptop has a bios function where you press a combination of keys on bootup and you get an option to make a complete mirror of your drive(many dvd's) or a manufacturers install disc(complete with drivers but no user data only 1 dvd) My laptop is an Acer 5310

I personally use free software called DriveImage. It works similarly to Norton Ghost.

I run it everyday to make an image of my entire hard-drive onto my removable hard-drive.

I have proved that it works when my hard-drive crashed, and I managed to be up and running within an hour after replacing my hard-drive. The key is that the image restore will only work on the same hardware and driver specifications.

It is also possible to do selective restoring of files and folders, irrespective of the hardware and driver specifications.
