In the attached photograph, you will see three different sized Exe (increased safety) cable glands, (from L - R, No.2; No. 1 and No. 0). These cable glands are used to make off and gland cables with braided wire armouring, unlike steel wire armour. The braid is much thinner, and therefore the cable is more flexible.
The braided armour can be galvanised steel wire braid, or in some cases, tinned copper, or phospor-bronze wire braid.
These cables are generally used on ships and are halogen free, fire retardant and oil resistant.
The glands are Exe, or increased safety glands. These cable glands may be used in Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations, on Exe apparatus, such as a certified Exe Junction Box.
These glands (Exe) MAY NOT BE FITTED TO FLAMEPROOF (Exd) EQUIPMENT!!!
There is a huge difference between a FLAMEPROOF gland and an INCREASED SAFETY GLAND. I shall demonstrate the difference in a later post.
Take a look at the three glands. The two outer glands show the braid has been folded over the cone and quite frankly, this is untidy. The gland in the centre has had the braid neatly trimmed.
From top to bottom the different external components are:
Cable cores, cable bedding, nipple and locknut, nylon IP washer, gland body, red Ex identification band with certification details, compression nut and then outer cable compression seal and cable sheath.
The internal view shows the inner seal, high tensile brass inner body, encapsulated with high grade engineering plastic, the cone ring and cone bush, plus the braid, mentioned earlier.
