It's all dead easy on SARS eFiling, apart from the fact that you have to generate the return. When I did our April returns it was a bit of a shock to discover no EMP 201 had been issued until I found the "request return" link.

I must say I like the new EMP 201 - much simpler. However, it looks like what we are gaining on the swings we might lose on the roundabouts - I see we're going to be reconciling every 6 months (instead of the current once a year) in future.

Yes. The next PAYE reconciliation must be submitted from 01 Sept'10. This gives SARS the ability to further crack down on tax evasion. Something to keep in mind is that the new fields that only created a warning during this filing season (such as the Employee Income Tax Reference number) will now be mandatory.

The good news though, is that SARS e@syFile will allow employers to register their employees, who don’t have an income tax number, through the system - refer to the excerpt out of the SARS PAYE Reconciliation Guide below:

"Employers are requested NOT to refer employees who earn LESS than R60 000 per annum to their local SARS branch offices to be registered for income tax purposes, but to rather register these employees using the e@syFile™ Employer software facility which will be released in August / September."

It's so tempting to send my staff anyway...

If we all did it, could you imagine the overload at SARS offices
