Trade and Industry on Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment accreditation and verifi

Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) accreditation and verification

    29 January 2010

The Department of Trade and Industry would like to bring to the attention of market that as from 1 February 2010, non accredited verification agencies will no longer be allowed to issue verification certificates. However, all verification certificates issued by these agencies before 31 January 2010 will remain valid for a period of 12 months from the date of issue.

This follows the gazette notice issued last year by Minister Rob Davies whereby he extended the validity of certificates issued by non-accredited verification agencies to 31 January this year.

Departments Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) Chief Director, Nomonde Mesatywa, says no more vacillation.

Come 1 February, only BEE verification certificates issued by accredited verification agencies and verification agencies that are in possession of a valid pre-assessment letter from the South African National Accreditation Systems will be valid. However, companies that are in possession of certificates that were issued by non accredited agencies before 31 January 2010, do not have to panic, as they will still be able to use the certificates for twelve months after the date of issue, said Mesatywa.

Mesatywa added that the Department of Trade and Industry has made significant progress in refining, redesigning, and streamlining the accreditation process in order to ensure that measures to adequately capacitate the industry are in place, and these will be announced at regular intervals.

The overall aim of accreditation is to ensure credibility, consistency and competence of the verification industry, and establish a measurement of excellence against which agencies should strive for, in terms of compliance with BBBEE criteria.

The list and contact details of all accredited verification agencies and the ones that are in possessed of valid pre-assessment letters is available at the Department of Trade and Industrys website: http://www.thedti.gov.za and the South African National Accreditation Systems website: http://www.sanas.co.za
