The following exit interview presents an example of the type of questions which could be valuable in the context of our own business and the questionnaire could be utilised as is, or as amended - depending on the seniority of the person departing. In all instances, the questions are “discussion starters” and should prompt follow-up questioning.

In my experience there were two types of exit interviews.

One was the nice employee who would tell you anything he thought you wanted to hear cause he would not want to burn the bridge and the second who not only would burn the bridge but your exit interview piece of paper with it.

On top of that, most of these documents were just filed in the employees file or file 13 and never used for management purposes, future training, promotion needs etc.

Result was - warm happy feeling 1 - Trees 0

The best exit interview usually did not involve any paperwork - rather a few glasses of alcohol stuff and a speech that went 'goodbye and goodluck'. Thats of course if we liked the person. Otherwise it was just 'goodbye.

That was past. Times are tough. If you haven't analyzed your exit interviews, or even your appraisals, then you have to start from scratch. These were means of measurement. Now is the time for improvement. I believe we are going to get busy again one day and if we are not ready for it, the system as you know it will either fail or slow down dramatically.
