    A question of degree

    I recently asked my friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up.
    She said she wanted to be President some day.

    Both of her parents, ANC supporters, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"
    She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents smiled hugely.

    "Wow...what a worthy goal." I told her, "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that.
    You can come over to my house for a morning and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you R100.
    Then I'll take you over to the supermarket where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the R100 to use toward food and a new house."

    She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked:
    "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the R100?"

    I said, "Welcome to the Democratic Alliance."
    Her parents still aren't speaking to me.
    The cost of living hasn't affected its popularity.

    That was priceless!

    If only we could distribute a tutorial of politics, to all future voters, based on humor like this!

    I loved it too, but I couldn't help but wonder how the homeless guy that hangs around the supermarket might feel about this deal.

    But that's why he's homeless! I strongly believe (just from personal opinion and a few interesting reads elsewhere) that many choose this style of living.

    Granted there are most that don't have the choice (with work) and are forced into it, but once there, begging seems to be more profitable than a hard days graft at someones house. Often my sympathy is muted by that thought..

    Self centered and not very humane of me, but thats just me..

    In A similar vein;

    My friend drops of his daughter at school every day, and they always pass the same beggar. Every day THIS beggar used to receive his share of loose change from my friend. It came a to a rapid end when his daughter asked this question;

    "Daddy, if the beggar can wake up early, and sit in the sun all day, why cant he just find himself a job?"
