    what the world wants

sorry if this seems like a completely random spurt of thought, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. anyway, here it goes.

with the global financial crisis an ongoing topic and the cause of many companies shutting down, trends are bound to change. Whether you're a newcomer to the business world, or a longtime veteran, the question that is on, or should be on a business owner's lips is "what does the world want?" Questions that can build on this would include:

is my business meeting one or more relevant demand?
    is this profitable?
how can I align my business with one or more of these demands?

I don't own a business, but my thoughts have recently moved onto how I can make use of my skills to fill a gap. being that I'm a programmer, most of what I could do would be related in some way to a PC.
what could I do that will be profitable, and fill a need or want? with a program being able to fill so many niches, where do I start?

so there are some of my thoughts. If only I had the answers hahaha.
feel free to give some of your own ideas on the topic, or say whether your business is meeting one of the world's wants

Hmmm interesting thoughts! One of the things i am fairly convinced of is when things go to depression, the world turns to "sinful" past times, drink, sex, and spending money when they shouldn't be on going out, going to games etc. Guess it's to forget and drown sorrows? When times are good, to busy for those past times making money..

The core of any viable business, no doubt.

I've really been paying attention to the demand part of that equation of late. Karen Wheller said some time ago that the business should ideally find a product that people want, rather than need. I've become painfully aware that this is a really important distinction when it comes to talking about demand.

When people want something, they tend to abide by the rules of the game - including paying the provider. When they need something, the niceties of civilised transactions seem to be tossed by the wayside if they happen to present any kind of obstacle.

And the challenge in your line is that people typically need your services....

When it comes to some aspects, yes - I'm afraid so.

Not all our services fall in the need category, but the fact that I'm exposed to both categories has highlighted the rather remarkable difference in client behaviour between the two, particularly in current times.

Hard to to say - if you want to play sport you need to see me. What brand and how much you are prepared to pay is the want aspect I guess.
