    Laser Printer

    Hi all,

We are in the market for a laser printer. B& W. Approximately 1000 pages per month. (i.e pretty minimal) Any suggestions or dire warnings?
    Regards

I'd suggest you stay as far away from anything resembling HP!!

Over a year ago i bought a HP printer costing R 4000 and now four printers and 10 printheads later me thinks I got screwed.

Given the relatively small capital outlay on smaller laser printers, I don't know that it's worth getting too brand focused. They're almost disposable items anyway. And it's hard to recommend a specific model because they keep on changing.

Probably the most important question to ask is toner cost per copy. Even at 1000 pages per month, 75c per copy vs 30c per copy is a big difference.

Toner is the new opium, and I have noticed a trend towards smaller toner cartridges (you get fewer copies per cartridge) that cost about the same as the larger ones. What I would look for is a printer that gives the most copies per toner cartridge.

If you're talking to a good sales rep, they should steer you in the right direction.

    I like these two:

Samsung ML-1640 selling for about R 700 - R 800 depending on where you shop.

    Canon LBP2900 R 900 - R 1100

I don't know how much their toner cost.

We use a HP1018 for invoicing etc. Large runs we send through to our Bizhub.

    Thanks everyone.
We had a HP laserjet 4P (about 12 years old) that finally packed up! Got about 5000 copies to the toner at R500 per cartridge - I think it fell out of the window once and I know the cat slept on it for many years and it just kept ON and ON and ON. Finally gave its last gasp some time in December, so it was with fond memories and reluctance that I have finally buried it.

    The cat misses it too!

I'm waiting for my Samsung SCX-4521F to be delivered, its not very cheap but the cost per page is also 10c.
    R 299 for generic toner, 3000 pages with a 5% yield.

Just how much did you end up paying? Even if it's R1000 more than a dirt cheap printer, with that toner cost it's worth it.
