Am I correct in my interpretation that the table above gives the change in contribution to GDP for each sector?

No. They are actual, but adjusted to 2000 price levels. My purpose was to show the relative contribution of the sectors rather than change trends.

The link above takes you to the source document, but I couldn't find a short cut to take you to page 14. On that page the figures go back to 1993, I think. I could add columns for other years if you want to see movement trends.

The avantage in the adjusted figures is that it makes meaningful comparisons fairly easy without having to discount the effects of inflation.

I had a look at that, and that was when I got confused as to whether it was the change, or the absolute. When I read the text a bit earlier in the doc it seemed ambiguous - I'll just take another look.

I've added the 2000 and 1993 year figures to the table. It's in reverse order to what it should be (sorry about that), but looking at the figures side by side like that is actually really interesting.

Bear in mind the figures are adjusted to compensate for inflationary effects, so those are real changes!

So in relative terms to the whole economy, mining is coming down as well as water and power. This certainly tells a story. Thanks for the work.

Looking at the growth (or decline) in the value each sector contributes also makes for interesting reading.

    % change in GDP contributors

Now all we need is a table which shows the % of GDP values.

I've just finished reading through the SA Blook, and was wondering whether anyone else made their way through the whole thing. I'm really interested to get some honest feedback on the whole thing and find out what other people thought of it. Let us know if you have some thoughts.

Funny you should post that now - I'd just started picking up on it again. I've finally got round to Chapter 1.

We need more Siyabonga Nhlumayo's on the scene. He acknowledges the more cynical aspects of SA life, whilst reminding us of the progress many don't see. The Maponya Mall sounds like just the kind of progress we need to see in SA - normalisation of the abnormal. How could Soweto not have a great mall before? Perhaps more to the point, why did it take until September 2007 to see one put in place?
