    The olympic torch

The torch relay for the Beijing Olympics is set to begin in Greece. The 130-day, 137,000km relay will take in five continents and the summit of Everest visiting each of China’s 31 provinces before arriving in the National Stadium in Beijing (to August 8).

I thought getting the olympic torch to the top of Everest would pose some challenges.
China's bold plan to take a special Olympic torch to the top of Mount Everest faced a possible setback on Saturday as snow fell on the world's highest mountain.

The climbing team has been at 6 500m in advanced base camp or higher for at least two days, waiting for better weather to take the flame to the 8 848m peak and claim the crowning moment of a relay that was marred by anti-China protests on its round-the-world journey.

"It's normal to have snow in mountain areas," said Suonam Cuomu, deputy director of the Everest torch logistics department. "We are very well prepared. It's not necessarily bad news because after snow there is often a few days of good weather.

"But the heavy snow will have an effect on route building in the mountains," she told a media briefing.

    Quick note:

They actually did it. On 8th May 2008 the Olympic torch passed over the summit of Mount Everest.

    I've got to say - I'm impressed.

The torch relay lead-up is pretty common practice nowadays. Good marketing, really.

I wonder if by having the torch extinguished three times on its way, this time has some esoteric and dark foreboding meaning?

Don't they keep a backup flame in the background?

The Everest flame was something completely seperate too.
