hmmm, well, I just took a look at the copy speeds I am getting between HDDs...54-60 MB/s !! compared to the usual 32 I was getting, I'd say that's a good increase

moneymaker, Microsoft doesn't make the drivers. the manufacturers are charged with the creation of compatible driver sets for the OS. this is why so many people have complained about vista, just due to the fact that there aren't as many drivers out there that are vista-ready. what toshiba notebook do you have? and what driver issues are you currently experiencing? it might be an idea to try and go to the manufacturer site, and download a fresh update of the drivers that are giving you hassles. otherwise, I'll take a look around and see whether I can find any known compatibility issues with your notebook.

Doesn't Vista automatically check for driver updates for you?

I honestly don't believe so. I had a gigabit lan card that I spent a few hours on looking for drivers. it was a D-Link, so a very well established networking brand, but vista's updating system didn't find the drivers.

I know that Vista has retrieved updates for both my LAN and video card. They are not typically automatically chosen for installation, but are "Optional" and can be chosen for installation manually.

I've got the Toshiba Satellite P200D.....seems to be having problems with graphics driver, fingerprint reader and smartcard reader....Does appear to be intermittent - but 'blue-screens' and then recovers....

have you had an attempt at updating the drivers for those? I noticed that when I got a latest version of my motherboard drivers, windows live messenger starting working again =/ I had thought it was a vista issue. otherwise, find out the manufacturers of those parts and I can do some digging.

Moneymaker, open the start menu and type "update" in the search box. Choose "Windows Update". Click "Check for updates" in the top left. Once it has checked, click on "View updates" (I think - can't check it at the moment). There may be some optional updates which you can select and install.

I have a suspicion that Toshiba might be the culprit and not Vista. My Acer has no problems, my Toshiba is still a problem. none of my previous issues has been solved.

as I said before drivers are made by the laptop company, not vista. vista can only scrape what it can find.
