    Good news for lithium 7 amp/hr batteries

    Finally it has happened, there is a lithium 7 amp/hr battery for under R500 including VAT off the shelf

    Some might say you get what you pay and all that stuff, if I can save R500 and buy 2 for the price of one and it lasts 1 year less than the other.

    I will collect one to day and cut it open like I did with the others, to see what the build quality, battery and BMS type.

    Can the normal gate motor charge a lithium battery ?

    I have been told and what I kind of know is that lithium charges different to SLA.

    So does the BMS make the SLA charger now work or do you need a charger ?

    BMS I learnt is to protect the battery so not sure if helps on charging ?

    But this is still very very cool !!!

    The response I got from one of the manufacturers was that they use them at home, thats about as technical response I could get.

    What I can tell you is that a standard 7 amp/hr gate or alarm battery doesnt last after 4 days of ant stage of load shedding.

    The alarm and gate chargers are trickle chargers at 13.8 VDC, some have 500mA charger currents and some have 750 mA 13.8 and I know of alarm system which has a dip switch to select between 500 mA (for 7 amp/hr FLA batteries) and 1 amp (for 18amp/hr FLA batteries) charge current depending on the battery used.

    Lithium batteries charging and discharging is a little more complicated than that.

    Once again I am brand new to all this and would encourage anyone who has the knowledge and experience to share the facts with us.

    It is going to be interesting to see the build quality if the R1000 lithium 8 amp compared to the 7 amp/hr lithium. I will be cutting it open this weekend to have a look inside.

    Imagine that all the 7 amp/hr batteries are already sold out and they dont know when the next shipment will arrive. I have managed to secure a pile of the other size we use a lot.

    I didnt even have to cut it open, 4 screws on top and pop the top off.

    Just what I expected compared to the more expensive battery.

    A blob of silicon and pieces of black rubber to hold pack in blue heat shrink. The BMS inside the shrink.

    The more expensive battery has all the cells in set in a solid base, no shrink and the BMS secured at the top. The case clips to together without any screws, just a snug fit.

    This battery sounds cheap but then more affordable lithium for the masses.

    I still need to learn more on charging as the SLA is different to lithium.

    But if it works and lasts then perhaps it is a suitable solution. Also no one is now going to change their motor to now have a lithium charger.

    The one thing missing in all this lithium mayhem, a simple little PCB charger unit suitable for these lithium replacement batteries.

    You can buy expensive lithium chargers and use inverters and solar chargers to charge lithium batteries, but I havent found a small PCB type charger.

    Another factor that might come into consideration, the low voltage cutout. From the data sheets I have looked at it seems 9.2 VDC is the BMS cutout.

    Why would it become a problem, because once the BMS cuts out the you have to wake up the battery. On paper it should never happen, why because the alarm or gate will shut down at 10.5 VDC.

    One example of a situation that would result in the battery cutting out, alarm systems where the armed response company has connected the radio directly to the battery, which is one of the reason your alarm battery has to be replaced every time there is 3 days or more load shedding or over stage 4 load shedding. There is a PCB which is suppose to be fitted to the battery terminals which will cutout the battery at 10.5 VDC (which is 100% DOD).

    I opened one of those batteries and pulled it apart, you certainly get what you pay. the interesting part is how long will they last, and will they last the 3000 cycles or will the BMS fail before the cells?

    IF you compare the build to the Blue Nova (I also stripped), the cells are set in a resin and the cells are the lager than 18650 and the BMS takes up the whole of the battery, you getting what you pay.

    By the way try buy one of the those secri prod 7 amp/hr batteries, I collected the last of the stock yesterday, but I thinking the blue Nova might be a better option for my customers who expect a better build quality product
