In any event, if you have to register for Workman's Compensation, as electrical contracting falls under construction I strongly suggest you register with FEM rather than with the DoEL version of Workman's Compensation.
I am a CC. I am the only Member of the CC and I have no employees. I dont want to register for workmans comp if i can avoid it

Can I ask why you prefer FEM?

Technically, you are an employee of the cc.
There is an upside to being on cover - if there is an accident and you require expensive medical attention, you will be covered. The obvious challenge in the one person business is the minimum per annum cost.

    Much easier to deal with.
    Prompt.
    Responsive.
Actually pay out no claim and low claim ratio rebates.
    Actually do pay time-off-work-for-IOD wages.

All things that don't happen with the government scheme.

  4. Thanks given for this post:

We also changed across to FEM many years ago and the service is equivalent to a good medical aid when it comes to IOD

I know of a contractor that had a car accident on the way back from seeing a client on a call out one evening and he claimed IOD - Everything was covered

You will also get your good standing letter within a week vs a year if you lucky

    Thanks for the info.
So, what code do I register under?
I see that J0152 is Civil Construction and L1340 is Engineering.
I don't see anything that says electrical repairs as that is my only function.

Are you using the FEM on line portal - https://roe.fem.co.za/ - there should be Electrical Contractor E03

I'm in the same situation as Leecat I'm a CC and one man business. Last year I done my registration through DOL without any issues, This year different story, sent all my documents through to DOL except COID and UIF which I don't have and they replied without any message they just mailed back the renewal form. ( So what does that mean) So I think it's because I don't have COID and UIF. What is my options here?
Is it better to close the CC and start trading as a sole proprieter to be allowed to be a electrical contractor and trade as a one man business, What is the options here to trade as a one-man business and be registered as electrical contractor or are they closing us one-mans down?

I've always been a one man business, no problem. I'll see in January when I renew, what happens. The lady that used to be very helpfull in East London DOL has left and I have heard from other electricians trying to renew that there were problems.

I always go in personally to renew. This time I'll take some chocolates and flowers with. That usually works wonders.

Just some feedback. I managed to get my registration with DOL as sole proprietor. I decided to stop trading as a CC business because this seems to be problematic for a one man business who do not want to register with DOL. I will now trade under my own name as sole proprietor. It seems there's no other option if you want to be a oneman business and do mot want to employ people, otherwise DOL will not approve the application. This is if you do not want to register with COID, UIF and can't employ people yet. The CC seems to have to much RED tape and make it's basically uneconomical for a small guy like me. The only reason I liked the CC was should I get the opportunity for some bigger project it might of been easier to tick all the boxes and employ people if needed. At least I got my contractors registration from DOL under my own name now by adding avadids and whatever to the application. At last I can work again and don't have to tell customers I don't have a electrical registration and can't help them.
