Im not sure what you mean by good? Do you mean effective? As an affiliate looking to earn? or a company that offers a program for affiliates?

Speaking as a company using it as a marketing tool:

It can be effective, you can definitely reach a broader audience if you are working with the right people. But there are pros and cons to it.

Because you are piggybacking off of somebody else's traffic without having to grind for that traffic.
Of course, you will pay for this, usually much less than say AdWords but affiliates are generally much more flexible than Google Adwords in terms of pricing models. .
In most cases, you don't pay for the click but only for actual sales.

However you can get scammed quite easily with it if you work on a pay-per-click type model, and your content will ultimately be in the hands of whomever website you advertise on.

It takes a bit of homework, establishing and ensuring that proper guidelines are set and kept with the affiliate.

Well, it can be profitable, sure. But it's not that easy to make it work. As my company's experience in starting an affiliate network shows, you must follow some steps. Like, for example, starting your your own website, setting up an affiliate account, explaining to your audience what product you're promoting, and so on...
