As the LED supplies will tell you when you return a lamp thats doesnt offer the 50 000 hours as promises ... its a eskom thing ... I have a feeling that the CBI E/L unit has sensitive electronics.

The bottom line is load shedding is destroying electronic components ... maybe not today or tomorrow ... that's why I contacted my insurance company to verify that I had cover ( which apparently I don't ... only "lightning" damage).

To save myself the additional monthly cost to specify each items in the house ... I am going the ellies plug with built in insurance .. that way offering a little protection with cover.

Will make a note for items not specified and wait till we experience a lightning storm like we had the other night and attempt to recover my losses.

It is sad to think medical aid and insurance has become industries where you need to dot your i and cross the t ... and you have to learn to play the same game.

We talk business profits and losses ... yet if I think back of my biggest financial losses (close to R2M) ... due to bad choices with brokers and cover ... my bad debt for a 30 year old business is no where near that ... there must be more millionaire clubs in the insurance industry than any other industry ... it would be interesting to compare to the pharmaceutical industry.
Comments are based on opinion...not always facts....that's why people use an alias.

    Hi All
Was meaning to reply to this thread over the break, but you know how it goes... no load shedding, no problem lol

Your 2 earth leakages are still going to be subjected to the same incoming supply which is the suspected cause of the trip. Installing an extra earth leakage is only going to solve the problem if the problem can be re created with the mains switch thus proving that the fault is actually on the installation.
Anyway, It will be interesting to know the outcome.

The trip connect does basically the same as the fridge safe unit.
One will still require a contactor irrespective of which one you use.

Spec sheet of fridge safe unit:

A tv safe unit can also be used. In my opinion, a better option.

    Keep us posted.

    Peace out .. Derek.

Edited 17.51 to include tv safe specs.
Derek do you agree that the fridge safe unit protects against undervoltage and the tv safe from overvoltage?
Would the trip connect unit or the Fridge Guard unit from @justloadit not provide better protection ie under and over voltage protection?

Eitherway, I have just ordered a fridge and tv safe unit (had a voucher) but I think the din style trip connect would make for a neater installation - I have 4 modules space left in my board.

Is this the correct type of contactor to get?

Still would need to get someone in the centurion are to do the instalation for me, if there are any leads?

Hi Rodja. Agreed, but either one will serve the purpose. They both have a time delay before switching on and that's whats needed. A normal delay on timer also does the trick. The first time I saw this was someone using a delay on timer and contactor and it solved his problem.

    Peace out .. Derek Stuart.

  5. Thanks given for this post:

Sorry forgot to mention. That contactor should be fine. You can also use a 3ph rated 25A contactor and parrallel the 3 contacts.

    Peace out Derek Stuart

So I contacted clearline to ask about the time delay settings on the Trip-Connect 1F unit - its 10 sec or 5 minutes only, the tech guy mentioned that there is a newer programmable unit that will not require a contactor either, so I have ordered that instead. Will also fit better in the little space left in the db.

Just to update. I installed the above unit last week and everything is working 100% now. No more trips when load shedding ends and no having to wake up at 2/4am to switch the power back on.

Thanks for the help that everyone provided. Much appreciated.
