And it hasn't been reported as stolen?

You can ask the seller or officially report about this to avoid any future regrets.

A lady friend of mine purchased a car second hand. The car was registered in her name no problem. She got a call from the cops about a month later saying that the car had been reported stolen and that she had to return the car to the original owner. She spoke with a lawyer and the cops and they all agreed that the car had to go back to the original owner. The long and the short of it is that she gave the car back, lost R20k and nothing happened to the intermediate sellers who all pleaded innocence.

I think that this happens because the Police stations are not all electronically connected to a central system. It takes months for the information to get inputted and only then do the licensing and theft information get collated.

Considering that the Western Cape is "only" behind with 200,000 DNA tests I think it is actually a miracle that they collate any information at all!!!!!!!

Try to find the registered owner as soon as you can, otherwise
It's better to officially report about this or give it back before it brings any problem. You can even ask the officials to help with tracing.
