Oven tripping earth leakage

Hi,

My oven is tripping the earth leakage only under a certain condition.

The oven has a combo (grill & top) element and a bottom element. The oven has 4 settings, i.e. grill, top, bottom and top & bottom. When each of the 3 elements are switched on individually, i.e. grill, top and then bottom, the earth leakage does not trip. When the top and bottom elements are switched on together then the earth leakage trips after about 2 minutes. I checked the top and bottom elements for cracks/holes but there were none.

Any idea what could be causing this behaviour?

All elements have a slight leak to earth - Each element individually does not have " sufficient " leakage to cause the earth leakage to trip but the 2 together may push the leakage to above the 30ma that will cause the earth leakage to trip .

If you left the one element on for 30 min , switch off and then leave the other one on for 30 min it will more than likely "dry " the element out and both will work together.

A stove does not have to be on earth leakage if it is connected up as a stove point- If it is plugged into a socket then the socket has to be on earth leakage .

Due to this regulation (6.16.3.3) connection to free-standing stoves could place the contractors’ credibility at risk. This regulation needs reconsideration from the SABS 10142-1 working group due t the fact that these parts are difficult to source, making them impractical in today’s installations. The installation of these devices created complications in installations that should not exist. In short, this concern should be raised and taken forward.

It would be good to see some feedback from the Technical Committee on this!

The procast stove couplers are readily available again and being made by Jac Manufacturing ( www.jacman.co.za )

With that said there has been a publication to amend the type of socket that can be used for stoves - It is out for public comment at the moment

Hi....genuine approach to check is with a taps analyzer. I surmise a megger would work effectively as well. There probably won't be sufficient current from a computerized multimeter to see the break . its sounds clearly an awful one in any case . one quite safe approach to test would be eliminate the wires going to it and protect them at that point turn it on.
