Which NAS Drive for Home Office?

I am looking at installing a NAS Drive at my home office, mainly for backup purposes and file storage (wanting to move away from storing files in Dropbox, One Drive, Google Drive and iCloud). I also want to have the ability to access and share files remotely from the NAS device.

I am currently looking at a 2-bay RAID1 setup and the two candidates that I am considering are the Synology DS218+ and the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra.

The Synology unit seems to be the gold standard but it is a lot more expensive than the WD unit.

My question is: is the extra cost of the Synology unit justified for my purposes?

Neville I have been using a DS212 also with a RAID1 setup using WD drives. I installed it in 2012 and use it every singe day since installation and I have never ever had a hassle.

I think its the smallest in their range and perhaps it is a little slow, but I almost never reboot it, it just sits there and works.

Entertainment is one thing, but work is another. That said I have no experience with any other brand simply because the Synology has never broke.

I had a WD NAS, endless problems and slow. I purchases a Qnap 4 bay NAS a year ago with no issues and fast performance, local and remote. I would stick to Qnap or Synology. Best to watch a few youtube reviews and comparisons, also search problems for a specific drive you looking at. 4 x WD Red drives inside my QNAP.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I ended up ordering a Synology DS220j 2-bay NAS with two 2TB Seagate IronWolf drives. It should arrive in the next day or two. Very good reviews.
