Smile What to look forward to in 2008

Well here we go. 2008 has started. May it be a great year for you.

2007 certainly was an interesting year. Some of that was the really nice side of interesting, like South Africa winning the Rugby World Cup and an SA team winning the Super 14 - even if that was the Bulls

Some was a little closer to the Chinese curse side of interesting, like the sub-prime fiasco and Kenya sliding from one of the more stable countries in Africa to absolute chaos virtually overnight.

As always, we'll have to drag some of the baggage of 2007 into 2008, but hopefully there is much we can leave behind too. It's part of the magic of starting a new year, that sense of starting anew.

So what have we got to look forward to in 2008?

Off the top of my head:
    • The Olympics in China,
    • the USA elections
    • elections here in South Africa too (if I remember correctly)

What else is on the calendar for 2008?
And have you got anything special lined up?

First, a correction. Our next elections in South Africa are due in 2009.

On the business front, here's a brief global outlook on interest rates.
Global economic party not over yet
Ben Bernanke of the US, Mervyn King of the UK and fellow central bankers may go on filling up the world economy's punch bowl this year, even at the risk of an inflationary hangover.

Signs that the party is ending for global growth are keeping monetary policy leaning in the same direction at major central banks, with those in the UK and Canada likely to join Bernanke's Federal Reserve in cutting interest rates again. The same conditions may lead the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of Japan, which shelved plans for raising rates, to remain on hold for months.

"I expect 2008 to mark the beginning of another global liquidity cycle," says Joachim Fels, Morgan Stanley's London-based co-chief economist. "More signs of slowdown or even recession are likely to swing the balance towards more aggressive monetary easing in the advanced economies."

I'm not so sure we're going to enjoy the same treatment locally.

I have been working on a social/educational webpage for the past seven months, (most of it taken up by research and idea generation) and the basic framework will be ready by month end. Have had a great response from business, teachers, students and schools. Will post the address once it's nearer completion.

Right now, after hours and days of interrupted work due to being without power.......

In a drive to save on electricity consumption, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off till further notice.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Kindly postpone all hopes and dreams...

I've got to say I was hoping for good news when I started this thread - looking for the positives.

But the start of this year has been marked by an exceptional run of less than encouraging news.

Okay Dave YES! Lots of plans. New day, different mood!

The expansion of www.bizpremises.co.za is going to be a biggy for us and by virtue of its nature I hope it will be of benefit to ALL on this forum as well.

We will have an interesting rugby season! Can we reach the Super 14 final again?

On a personal front it is a biggy for me with all kinds of things to look forward to. This is STILL going to be an amazing year. We are GOOD at adapting and that is no doubt exactly what we will do!

Let's hope it's not the Chinese type of interesting, as in "May you have an interesting life."

It's pretty tough to guess what the line-ups might be like just yet. I think the Sharks are going to be a few stars short of last year. We might be leaning on the Bulls or Cheetahs to fly the flag.
