It does give you an idea of scale. What would you do differently if it gave you a count down to the last one?

Google Keyword Planner see limited data view of the search query. He can show values such as 0, 1-100, 100-1K, 1K-10K, 10K-100K, 100K-1M, 1M+ in the average monthly searches column.

You dont really have access to it without a ad words account. I have"before I used ad words" found a way on YouTube to get access through a incomplete account through Firefox. I say firefox because chrome has a persistent cache memory.

As for your actual question the numbers vs a range.
I went and read up on the topic somehat and found this :
A recent article published by Moz, describes how the Google keyword planner gives averages for “Average Monthly Search Volume” that are heavily rounded. The rounding algorithm that Google uses categorizes keywords by traffic volume using “buckets.” Long-tail keywords are usually three to five words phrases while head tail keywords are typically one or two words. Long-tail keyword buckets are very specific, with volumes separated by 10 or 20 visits, and head tail keyword buckets are very broad with thousands or visits separating traffic volume. This creates a problem because the bigger the search volume, the less certain you can be about the accuracy of the Average Monthly Searches (AVS).

Of course you cant trrust everything on the internet.

In my own personal experience I dont put all my eggs in one basket in terms of keywords. I have from 3rd party tools found keywords that paid of really well for me.

MY overall view on anything with adwords or google infact is test test test, because you can prove and disprove almost anything on the internet if you ask the right question. I also think googlew does alot of bull talking about their services.
