I recently moved house and have mislaid/lost the AC-DC mains adaptor for this lantern. I've opended it and it has a recharable battery LA 640 6V:4A.
What type of adaptor must I buy for this?

Exactly that ....... a ac/dc 6volt output adapter - quite common
You can even purchase a universal one from Builders that you can adjust your output
Thanks so much, got a BW near me.
Not quite so, those universal adapters are not voltage regulated, and if the current is too high, it will damage the battery. As the charging process does not stop when the battery is full, but will continue forcing more energy into the battery, causing damage to the chemical, plates and overheating damage.
Does the lantern have an internal charger electronics in it, or does it rely on the charger to be regulated?
This is evident by a small printed circuit board with some black coloured electronic component with a number of small legs. A simple resistor, blue or brown coloured tube with 2 legs is not a charger!
Being a 4Amp lead acid battery, and if no charger is present in the lantern, then the charger must be current limited to 7V and 600mAmp, especially if you leave the charger on for many hours connected.

Hi, thanks for your very informative reply. I unscrewed the bas and there is a PCB tucked inside.
I have found several AC-DC adaptors in our stuff which we moved and on has the following description.
Input : 230-240V~50Hz
Output : 12V=600mA 7.2 VA.
Do you think this could be the "missing adaptor"?
Nope 12v is more than 6v - as Justloadit says I wouldn't go more than 7v
Thanks, it might be easier for me to buy a new one as this one is a about 7 years old. Maybe the battery is knackered.
Can you take a picture.
Battery replacement is easy, Mantech has one
