    RCBOs?

    Hi guys

Any reason SA doesn't have something like these yet?
    http://www.electricaldiscountedsuppl...30ma_240v_rcbo
    https://www.rselectricalsupplies.co....-nb3leuc20_422
    http://www.electricaldiscountedsuppl...230_240v_50hz_
    etc.

The advantage being the ability to wire every single plug/light from a separate 30mA RCBO (or 10mA which is also sold) without using more than a single DIN slot.

They are priced anywhere from R300 - R500 each, which is expensive, but considering it is 30mA Class A @ 10kA (Icn), I think is pretty well priced actually.

I've given up trying to find them here and I've been importing my own for a good while. http://www.theforumsa.co.za/forums/s...ier-for-RCBO-s

But how does one deal with the SANS/SABS approvals?

I've looked over the products and I have no doubt they would be approved, but I assume they need to be officially tested and approved?

SANS 60947 / IEC 60947 are interchangable, SANS adopted the IEC standard. We tend to use the Hager RCBO's which are IEC 60947 certified.

I don't have the 2017 regs yet but I have heard that we now have to call for separate earth leakage protection on geysers! It may be time to start incorporating these units to accommodate this regulation!

I'm not sure about the changes in regs but I really wish wholesalers would start stocking single-width module RCBO's, they've been available for several years already in many countries.

@AndyD: Do you have recommended suppliers to source these from?

Personally I prefer the Schneider Electrical breakers. My issue with the Hager breakers are that they are lacking in the technical details about their product. I can't really find much online. And of the bunch they are the most expensive. Both Schneider and Chint have extensive documents detailing everything.

Lack of technical documents to me is a warning sign.

But admittedly I may not be searching in the right places

I've bought from several UK national suppliers, whenever I require an order I tend to shop around for best prices and discounts, also shipping costs of some suppliers can also be an issue.

Hager do have full spec documents available for all their products, as you say they're not the cheapest but I've always found them to be very reliable and robust.

I'd suggest the first thing you need to establish when looking at RCBO's is which form factor you can accomodate in your particular application. They come in many shapes and sizes and even with the single width types they vary drastically in height, length and also whether or not a neutral and earth reference connection tail is required. You often find certain RCBO's won't physically fit in some enclosures which can be a big problem if you're upgrading an existing installation.

Have RCBO's become more freely available in SA?
    Where I can buy them?

Unfortunately not, as far as I know none of the major distributors stocks s-pole RCBO's. I hunted high and low in November last year when I needed some for a project but I ended up importing again from the UK.
