    COC for Home Automation

    Good Day

I bought a house last year and received a COC, but want to make some changes to my house to be a Automated House.
Because Laws and insurance so difficult to understand what is needed i do not want to carry on if i will waste my money and time to implement.
I bought the following to start with as i will probably build some units myself as i am a developer and electronics enthusiast:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonoff-ITEAD...72.m2749.l2649
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/86-EU-Sonoff...72.m2749.l2649

I want to use Sonoff to control my lights to start with, but not sure if i would be able to obtain another COC after changes have been done.

Could someone guide me in correct direction of what can be done and in what way should it be done?

    Thank You

If the house already has a valid CoC then a new certificate must be issued to cover just the new alterations to the electrical installation. There's no reason certification should be a problem if the automation work is installed to regulations and by a licensed electrician.

Any accessories used in an electrical installation are required to be SABS certified or equivalent (SABS IEC 65), requirements of VC 8055 also may be relevant. See also this thread.

It's a bit of a minefield Albert and I'm not even remotely an expert to be honest. In some circumstances with certain hardware IEC certification is recognised as compliant, in other cases it must be specifically SANS certified. To the best of my knowledge home automation equipment would need to be IEC60730 certified to be compliant in SA, I don't think there's an SABS standard and this is the same standard that would apply to a 24hr or 7-day timer switch for example..... but like I say I'm not at all certain about this.

The best info I could find was here but unfortunately it doesn't cover home automation as such. Maybe try contacting Safehouse or even the SABS direct with a question.
