I started writing a nice response to this post but then realised the OP and responding poster were both from the same region with zero post counts where the responding poster recommends a url which led me to believe this was just a shameless backlinking exercise.

In any case here is the response anyway for the benefit of the rest of the form:

Are you referring to hosting as in server space for your application or domain registration (or both)? Choosing a host and host package often depends on your application, it's size and expected amount of traffic. High traffic web apps require more dedicated services where as smaller start up sites can use shared space. A good approach would be to start small and scale your package as and when its needed.

With regards to your registrar, do you intend on using a top level domain i.e. .com or a regional domain such as .co.za? .com domains tend to be geared for a more wider reach internationally and has some feature such as WhoIS hiding, regional is more personalised for a local market. Best practice is to park both and redirect them to the same site.

Some people advise hosting the website and registering the domain with different service providers so that if one gets hacked the other is still in your control, this does however require more technical steps such as configuring the DNS.

I personally use Godaddy as a domain registrar (although some advise against it), and for hosting I've used a variety, frikkadel is cheap at R9 a month, bigger more reputable hosts include hetzner and rackspace.

Do some google research and get back to us.

Hai ya, to host your web apps avoid web hosting companies first, then don't host on your own hardware, also use GitHub pages, cloud storage services for static website hosting and finally use Heroku for free backend app hosting...
