    VAT Correction

    Good evening

Okay I am a total cluts.

I was about to complete a VAT return on e filing.

I wanted to make the screen bigger but instead of clicking on the plus I hit the file button and filed a nil return by mistake.

So I know i can do a correction but you can only change the output.

My client expect a substantial refund.

Is there any way to correct this without triggering a full blown audit.

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to increase the input. If you phone SARS all they tell you is that you need to claim the input in the next period.

It doesn't really matter if it is the original return of a correction, if there is a refund SARS will more than likely ask for supporting docs.

Out of curiosity, do they allow you to decrease the input claim?

If I remember from my experience, yes can decrease Input VAT when request for correction is done. Output VAT can be decreased but be prepared for definite verification/audit on a request for correction when doing that! When a newbie 1st year clerk made a mistake on a VAT return of a very difficult client he then decreased the Output VAT on the request for correction VAT return... SARS then actually called after uploading of Input VAT invoices to ask for Sales Tax Invoices and wanted first one of period and last one to follow up on number sequence!!! Better to explain error to client and claim 4 months Input VAT on next period's return!

They allow you to increase and decrease the output, but only to decrease the input

Just part of loading the cash flow effects to SARS's advantage then, I guess.
Or is it not that simple?

Anything is possible at SARS, but I agree that it is done only to SARS's advantage.

I managed to increase input tax once by refreshing the return... Maybe you should try that?

Yes, you can increase input, but not decrease the input
