    Hob Isolator

Hi - am a newbie to this forum. It would be great if someone could help me. I am installing a hob and oven in a new home. The electrician did not wire the original wiring correctly to handle the power demands of the hob / oven (hob = 39A and oven = 13 A) - place was wired with one isolator feeding these 2 appliances with 4mm wire connected with a 32A circuit breaker, It was then recommended that a separate 6mm wire be run to the db board to serve the hob separately with a 40A circuit breaker.
An electrician who I consulted with recommended that we install a double-pole isolator in the db board for the hob so that we do not need to install a separate isolator for the hob in the kitchen (it is hard to install the isolator in the kitchen area near the hob). The db board is in the scullery. The question I have is "is it compliant to have a double-pole isolator for the hob on the db-board - which is a in separate room from the hob it self"?

    Please advise?

    Hi Chris,

    the regulations state as follows

    6.16.3.1 Switch-disconnector
6.16.3.1.1 The circuit that supplies a cooking appliance through fixed
wiring, a stove coupler (see 6.16.3.3), or an industrial type socket-outlet
(see SANS 60309-1/IEC 60309-1), shall have a readily accessible switchdisconnector.
The switch-disconnector may supply more than one
    appliance. Amdt 4
    6.16.3.1.2 A switch-disconnector for a cooking appliance(s) shall
    a) be in the same room as the appliance(s),
    b) be at a height above floor level of not less than 0,5 m and not more than
    2,2 m,
    c) preferably not be above the cooking appliance(s),
    d) be within 3 m of the appliance(s), but within 0,5 m of the appliance(s)
if the switch-disconnector's purpose is not clearly indicated, and
    e) not be fixed to the appliance.

    hope this helps

The switch-disconnector/isolator required as mentioned is in addition to a circuit breaker in the db, as far as I understand.

You still need a circuit breaker in the db to protect the cable, which only needs a single pole circuit breaker of suitable rating.

I was referring only to the isolator.

There has to be a circuit breaker in the DB for the stove.

That's what I am saying as well, the isolator can not replace the circuit breaker in the db, a cb is still needed to protect the circuit, and as you have quote the regs, the sw / discon needs to be with 3m of the appliance, and in the same room.

just to be very clear on that distances of that Reg: (there is a big IF)

    "...be within 3 m of the appliance(s), but within 0,5 m of the appliance(s)
if the switch-disconnector's purpose is not clearly indicated, and..."
