Hobby wiring: Wiring requirements for a DCC railway layout

I am building a Digital Command Control (DCC) train layout and all the documents dealing with wiring are either UK or USA and talk about AWG or 7/0.2. When I went to my local electrical contractors store, they couldn't help with converting the UK and USA wiring standards to RSA standards; in fact they couldn't tell me what standard we used.

I need wiring (multi-core) in the following AWG sizes: 14, 20, 22, 24 and probably some others. If I go into a local electrical shop what should I ask for?

For the type of conversion I need look at http://www.dccwiki.com/Wire_Sizes_and_Spacing

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Ian
