    @#%#! WiFi

today was a awesome day i finally rid
myself of TP-Link Wifi router i took a
hammer to it and just smashed the
    living sh_t out of it

every f_cking day for the past year
and a half i had nothing but problems
with the setup connection speed and
it keeps dropping devices from the
    network

it takes 10minutes for all the devices
to connect and then it simply sh_ts it
    self and die

i am running 3 laptops and 1 desktop

with much satisfactory i took the
tp-link powder and guts back to the
computer shop and handed it to the
guy that sold me this piece of crap

and i demanded my money back he
didnt want to give me my money

sure the router was in tiny little
pieces but he knew i had trouble
with it for months and months

i got discount on a nice new 1000
mb switch and a few free cables

i am so happy he saw it my way

cables good old lan cables it just
    works

WiFi is as frustrating as heck when it doesn't work.

And then there is the hole I was in the other day at SARS Mt. Edgecombe. I'd taken my laptop with so I could get online to get files/pull up info on my server/email stuff for printing / whatever what was needed to get the issue resolved. Turns out they wanted a copy of the bank statement on the date the payment in issue was made.

No problemo - let me just get a historical statement for the day online and email it to you.

I go online and could only connect at GPRS speeds. It took over 10 minutes to open the bank's homepage
Frankly, the false hope that goes with a lousy connection makes it worse than having no connectivity at all. When you've got nothing at all, at least the pain is short and sharp, and you can move onto making peace with it and start exploring other options -
Like - I was going to have to come back to get the job done

After our recent crisis in Richards Bay, I have gone off cables. Some contractor ripped through our mainTelkom lines. 2500 businesses down. No phone, emàil or internet. We were down for 8 days. On the 7 th day my 23 year old daughter introduced me to wifi. She connected her phone to my computer at work and I wad able to go on the bank, download my emails etc etc etc. I felt like such a fool having sat there for a week complaining. I have a wifi backup plan now.

Telkom cables are a nightmare !!
At home I have moved to Telkom LTE. I now have a white modem with a sim card in it and get fantastic speeds.
I pay R699 for 50 + 50 gigs per month. It is slightly more but I haven't looked back with the good speeds.

I am even thinking about getting it for work, but the problem is that staff then all logon to the wifi and download/update their phones

I use Neotel for data and phone at the office. Although my phone has a landline number it is a Android handheld that I carry around with me. The WiFi router is great.

Now for the kicker. The TELKOM lines got ripped up and the entire suburb has been without TELKOM phone or ADSL lines for about a month. They can't tell when it will be fixed either. So my Neotel setup is already paying for itself.

share the internet i use the prepaid
option i pay about R900 for 20Gb of
data and it last for about 4 months a
    shot

i had a contract with mtn but mtn
sucked so badly it is factually worse
    then a pigeon on cocaine

R900 for 20gb is expensive, but the prepaid part of it works quite well. I also tried everything first then prepaid telkom. Was using too much data, with my son studying so bought the contract which worked out cheaper in the long run - haven't looked back

I feel you! Consumer brands like tp-link etc should never be used for people who want reliable, solid wifi. For reliability, I always recommend Mikrotik. They are less expensive than you think - see http://scoop.co.za. Virtually bulletproof.

If you are interested I have a brand new Netgear modem for you - I think it is the 700 ... the big one
