    Cell cracks glass?

I am a engineer, but got a tad surprised the other day. I drank something and the glass was empty. No temperature shock anywhere. My cell phone was charging and lying next to it. I heard a funny noise coming form the glass and on closer inspection it was cracked.

Does anybody have any idea what could have caused this?

Probably extreme heat concentrated on a small area of the glass. Lipo batteroes can get very hot.

I doubt it was heat as I touched the phone and it was not very hot hence I mentioned no temp shock.

All it takes is a small flawed spot and suitable differential temperature.

They do all sorts of weird and wonderful things with glass during production and the stress within the glass can cause cracking when, as Adrian says, even a microscopic chip occurs or because of minute imperfections from manufacturing. They also 'rim stress' drinking glasses or even fully tempered to stop them being broken and used as a weapon by combative drunkards.
