Electrician thinking of returning to SA

Hi, I am new at this forum and live in UK. Working as electrician and thinking of coming back. Do you think one can still make a living? What are the rates you people asking nowadays?

Your question would be the same as me asking how much people earn in the UK. It depends on where you are in SA (JHB generally has higher salaries), what you're qualified as and what experiance you have as well as how motivated you are. What electrical qualifications do you have? What type of electrical work do you do and are you self employed?

I am self employed and concentrate on domestic & commercial. Normally we work on minimum £25 per hour for maintenance and small installations plus materials which gives me x 16.5 = R415ph. That obviously includes any certificates when needed. Is that what you people are charging your customers?

Last years rate, call out fee R 710 which includes the first half and hour, then R450 per hour ex vat. R4.50 per km. IF you are an electrical contracting company and not charging at least this rate, then you are the cause of the problems in the industry and I hope you are removed or issued all sorts of orders because you are not following correct procedure or dropping unskilled labour on site.

Minimum of R950 for an "inspection report" (note this is for report only) the coc will be included at no additional cost if the inspection report indicates not faults, for a standard 3 bedroom house. As I mentioned above, if you are not charging at least this rate, then you cant be doing the inspection correctly, considering how long it takes to fill out the multi page document.

R 1322 inc vat for 1,5 hours domestic work sounds a bit expensive. cape town rates are definitely cheaper.

Lol, not necessarily. I'm not posting my rates in the open forums

I better not put my rate here either

The rates indicated are merely guide lines for "registered electrical companies" who use suitably "qualified electricians" to do breakdowns and maintenance, not the 2 bob wire pullers who drop off labour to chase walls and slap twin + e on the walls. There are pricing guidelines for that type of work and no callout rate is charged for that type of work.

The saying, you get what you pay for comes to mind when discussing rates.

Just to clear up the guidelines...no mileage should be charged if the job is within a 30 km radius of your office, this amount should be included in the callout fee. I don't charge a travel fee unless I go out of town.

Lets look at the callout fee, you get a call out in the morning.

You sit in traffic for 45 minutes, it cost R13,59 per litre for an electrician costing you x per hour (including his cost to company) plus his assistant, plus the vehicles maintenance cost, insurance. Maybe somebody can sit and give us actual costs to see if R750 is really that much to charge for a call out.

If you go to a car dealer they will charge you R550 to get a labourer to remove the drain plug a from your engine I thought they replaced all my spark plugs for that much, but I was told they don't replace plugs on every service any more.
