Oh wow! So they're adding an Earth to the useless 2-point we're using in SA? I'd rather they simply get rid of them, they never work properly and tend to make poor connection (especially with a one-unit transformer). The round pins were always an issue, the contact points around them are inefficient (as it usually only touches a small fraction of the surface area) and the 2 pins have smaller radius which makes them even more inefficient. I'd say they actually need to get away from these and opt for the square or flat pin designs used overseas - much better contact, much more secure (no wobbling and disconnecting, and (more importantly) less chance of a child sticking their fingers in there!

Obviously that is not practicable as old appliances would need adaptors to work on the new sockets. But this is rather strange, very seldom do you see sockets with the 2 prong plugs - usually you need an adaptor to fit onto a 3 prong socket anyway. Now you'll need an adaptor in reverse for your 3 prong plugs (if you don't have enough sockets for them). I want to see just how many muisneste people are going to construct in their kitchens to get the micro, the kettle, the fridge, the food processor, etc. plugged into those 2 prongs with added earth!

If anything I would go for these... But with an on/off switch.

\I fully agree with irneb. The person who invented the two pin plug should be hung.

Too true ... we're actually using the old British standard, the 2 pin is actually their shaver socket FFS! Even they've opted for the square shape (even on the 3 pin sockets): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_powe..._related_types

I just want to know which politicians son, uncle, niece has got the contract to import and distribute the first ship load of these plugs
Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today.

I have to renew quite a few "old" 3 pin 16 A sockets in a retirement cottage I'll be moving to and would like to fund the most reliable brand. I.e. Crabtree, CBI, LeGrand or Veti. I'm gioing to be shelling out for about eight and would appreciate advise so that I get the best bang for my buck.

I only know Crabtree and LeGrand well, from projects I've been involved in over the last 20+ years.

Personally I've found LeGrand more durable. Not to mention, they have a much wider range of appearance. Though I've tended to use these in hotels instead of residential - usually around 5 star hotels or boutique lodges.

However their cheap default switch is the little round one. Might not be ideal for a retirement village. I've found they're irritating as my finger sometimes has difficulty turning it off before unplugging, I can imagine someone with ailments like Parkinsons (like my grand mother had) finding them impossible to use. In which case the Crabtree default large rectangular switch may be more usable.

Of course if you're going for the more high-end designs then LeGrand is definitely the better brand. But they're going to be more expensive.

Gewiss is also an option. What size are the back boxes?
