    Short term insurance question

    Hi
I was recently robbed at gunpoint while in my car. My valuables were taken from as well as my car keys. (not the car)
My dad pays the insurance. I told him to inform the insurer of the incident. He did that and he was told that a note on the system was made.
They did not ask me to change lock sets or alarm. My fear is that if the car is stolen, then the insurer may refuse to pay due to the fact that the set of keys was stolen.
    What should I do.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Your dad must phone the insurer and ask them what should be done.

I would do exactly as PMB guy suggests. However in addition & for peace of mind do check the cost of replacing locks & keys. you might be lucky & pick up same at reasonable cost at a scrap yard. The cost might just be equal to your insurance excess

He did phone them and they didn't say anything about changing locks. I asked him to phone again.
The reason why I ask is because my friend, who was with also had his keys taken. He has since changed his locks and alarm, and claimed from his insurance.
He told me that an insurer may (or will) refused to pay since keys were stolen and risk profile changes.
I'm afraid that my insurer will say its fine now, but should anything happen, will refuse to pay claim.

Golfer - you need to clarify everything with the insurer first, otherwise you just wasting your time speculating about your best move. Flaker gave good advice about the access possibly being higher than getting it done yourself, but get all the info first. Good luck

    My suggestion:

Enquire about changing the locks in writing.
    Get a written response.
Make sure you keep the correspondence on file.

Most insurance policies from reputable insurers have an automatic extension which covers you to replace kets, locks etc.

Usual limit is around R2,500, and claims under the extension (with most) do NOT affect your no claim bonus.

I would certainly go ahead and do it, and submit a claim - but read your policy first to check you have the covers!

Trouble is, it items are stolen FROM your car, and there is no sign of forcible entry, Insurers WILL decline to pay.

If you want to discuss, email or call me....
