    INFO FROM SANS 1018 2005 EDITION 5 (THEIR IS 2012 ISSUE ) HOPE THIS HELPS
    5.4.2 Zone 1 locations
    The following shall be classified as zone 1 locations:
    a) the interior of a spray room and spray booth that, except for fresh-air intakes and exhaust outlets, can
    be closed off completely;
    b) the interior of an open spray cupboard;
    c) the space (excluding parts of it that are cut off by walls that have no openings other than fresh-air
    intakes and exhaust outlets) that extends from floor level to a height of 450 mm above the intended
    maximum height of a wet finish, or to a height which the flammable substance can normally attain or
    can accidentally attain, for example by upward spraying with a spray gun, and that is within a
    horizontal distance of 6 m of any of the following:
    1) an open spray cupboard;
    2) an area where a spraying operation (other than touch-up spraying) is carried out, but not in a
    closed spray room or closed spray booth; and
    3) a dip tank and its drain board(s);
    d) the entire space inside an exhaust duct; and
    e) the space that is within a sphere of radius 6 m and that has as its centre the outlet of an exhaust duct

    5.4.3 Zone 2 locations
    In the case of a spray room or a spray booth that has openings other than fresh-air intakes and exhaust
    outlets and that has spraying equipment that can operate when these openings are not completely
    closed, the following shall be classified as zone 2 locations:
    a) in the case of a spray booth, all space that is within a horizontal distance of 6 m of the openings in the
    spray booth (with the same vertical requirements as in 5.4.2); and
    b) in the case of a spray room, that space that is within the spray room but that is not classified as a
    zone 1 location.

    thanks for the quick reply. i also have those specs,but that 5.4.3 a is the problem. 6m from the openings is zone 2. however i know if you have adequate ventilation then the zone becomes smaller.i dont know by how much though. spray booth installer says 1,5 m . european spec says 3 foot, but the spray gun must have a solenoid cut out if the fan is off.
