okay, since we are on this, honda chief mechanic is now publicly in talks with other companies, what would the cool off period be for this ? I mean the guy needs to work, but he might spill some secrets such as settings on the car?

Well, I would say that these contracts can be seasonal. So at the end of the season he can resign but can only work at a competitor next season. The changes in F1 over the period of a season break is huge. What ever he shares with the competitors after the season will count as experience rather than some secret.

I agree, seasonal contracts... Problem with that is that even though R&D is mostly done for current cars, there is a percentage of work that goes into future generations and the knowledge that comes with that might be at risk...
Remember, Max is on the rampage and wants all F1 cars in the future to resemble Golf Carts with 200ml bio-fuel engines... He's losing another spectator the moment his dumb ass actually drops more power from these wonderful things of beauty...

Sounds reasonable, must admit. What would happen though if it was not seasonal? what do you think the situation would be if he changed, say mid season?
-
-
Still the same situation... On any given time time R&D works towards the future... As soon as some definitive gains are made they are placed on the cars, that's why the cars seem to change very race, even just a small fin or something in the engines...
At any point in time they are working on improving, thus there would always be something of value...
This can also be brought into light for any other company out there...

thanks riaan, but would you then let someone cross over mid season? and at what point do you start to withhold information that would be critical to your companies success?
-
-
Letting someone move to a competitor mid season would evoke a penalty clause in terms of financial means I think... Also, NDA's should be in place, but how do you actively enforce that?
In the situation with Chief Mechanics, no information can be withheld because they have to sign off on safety measures, it's a tricky situation... Unless you withdraw them from R&D and have someone else take their part for 3 months in order to keep your information safe...
