    Cool SA qualifications

Are South African qualifications any good in the UK, I'm moving at the end of the month and would appreciate any advice.

I would imagine it would depend on what your qualifications are.

For instance, rear-end wiper to Zuma, may not be overly sought after. Most degrees post 1994 seemed to end up as toilet-paper. A modern school qualification would probably not be worth an honourable mention - I'd imagine.

Right on, I got my papers back in 1975 except the masters in 1998 so perhaps there is some worth in them. Still committed to go at the end of the month.

I think it depends on which institute you went to? UCT is one to the best university respected all over the world.

I think you misunderstand, I am referring to electrical trade test at COTT in olifantsfontein and a master installation electrician examination. Never had money to go to university. Can't wait to leave

and for those who want to study at tertiary and those who want to continue with their PostGraduates Degree. must consider checking the world ranking of their prefered institutions before applying.

Ooh sorry. I think then it depends on the UK education authority, like here we have SAQA.

No problem but while we're on the subject, the standards of training for electricians is so poor nowadays. The poor guy has a "certificate" but hasn't a clue about the job. It's a shame really.

If you're relocating to the UK then my advice would be to do the 17th edition course (I think it's now known as C&G 2382). Once you have passed this get PartP registered and join a scheme such as ELECSA / NAPIT. Their requirements are pretty straight forward and if you're focussed and with your existing level of skills the whole process should take a couple of months. Their requirements for scheme membership are mostly paperwork based, you need testers with calibration certs, insurance and a couple of samples of work. This will enable you to perform general electrical installation / repair work and to sign off your work. You could also then approach C&G to see if you can get your existing SA quals transferred but at least you'll be able to work whilst this more lengthy process takes place.
