SARS VAT return charged penalties for late submission

    Hi

I did two VAT returns for different companies for the 201305 period on efiling. For both returns they charged penalties. Today is only the 26th of June and on the SARS efiling website they are saying:

28-06-2013 - Submission and Payment of VAT201 – Registered VAT eFilers

Why are they charging penalties. Do I miss something?

    Thanks

    Miriam

Request a statement of Account, if there is still a penalty, then let me know, otherwise there shouldn't be a penalty

Have you loaded a payment via e-filing for those returns?

I processed a 201305 period VAT return for a company yesterday (26th June) as well, without any penalty report problems. But then I load the payment (post dated to due date, or course ) straight away.

As I recall, if you don't have a payment loaded against the return, the unpaid returns listing does show a penalty after the 25th, but this disappears once the payment is [loaded or processed - can't recall which].

I had the same. We were told that if it is not done by 12 o clock due date, penalties are due. (Perhaps you did it late previously). I now ensure that I do all returns at least a day earlier. Went to see them in this regard and was first told to fill in an ADR form. Once I had done that and returned it to them they said that was not the correct document and told to write a letter requesting the penalties and interest to be waived with back up documents. Did that and submitted and have been told that I will hear from them.

It automatically loads a penalty if generated after the 25th. The penalty does not get added to the payment amount, but will appear on the statement to the 28th. If the payment is loaded and scheduled for the 28th or earlier, it is removed from the statement after month end.

Thank you so much guys. I didn't know that. Normally I do the returns earlier so I never had the problem. I will check the VATSA at the end of the month if the penalties still there or removed. All the best Miriam

Oddly enough, I did not encounter it this month
