What procedure to follow by using a trade name for a Sole Proprietorship?

I am really confused as to how I should register a trade name as a sole trader. I have heard about registering a defensive name but I am not exactly sure what this is. I have already reserved a name and it has been approved. I want to trade with this name as a sole trader. How do I go about doing this?

When it comes to name reservation, there are two options on the form - Proposed Name and Defensive Name.

It would seem if you go with Proposed Name, the purpose is to register a company with that name.
And if you go with Defensive Name, and that is the name reservation that has been accepted, you should be good to go trading as a sole proprietor.

CIPC has a pretty good guide on how to do a name reservation here.

You also asked about which forms are required via pm:

Then you have performed step 1. You now need to register it, using the tracking number on the form CoR 10.1. They will then issue you a CoR 9.4

    The steps are:
    - reserve the defensive name and you immediately are able to print the CoR 9.1 (Application to reserve name)
    - wait for them to issue CoR 10.1. This is then indication that the name is not in conflict and can be registered.
    - lodge registration and wait for CoR 9.4 to be issued.

It used to happen pretty pronto, but presently it seems to take ages.

If you are doing this yourself, no problem. If someone else is doing it for you, he will have to transfer the ownership of the name to you, because it belongs to whomever done the lodgement.
