    Proteas now a Brand?

The Proteas brand and being a part of this team is something that is important to me and the rest of the guys. To be able to achieve this milestone in these colours is something that I will remember for a long time. This is a quote by Graham Smith in the article
    Link to News24 article.

I know cricket is a professional sport (read a big business) but referring to the team as a brand just seems wrong. Surely you play for the pride of your country which should be more important than the "brand".

    What do you guys think?

Quite an achievement and the team is making us proud. Pity they are not Springboks. (Is South Africa a brand?)

What worries me is that the brand seems to be more important than representing SA.

What happened to the old days where it was an honour and privilege to play for your country? The soccer starts are not interested because they are making more money playing for their clubs. There is so much money in match fixing and betting that in many sports the national team does not matter any more.

Negativity aside, I hope that the boys klap the Paki's big time.

In marketing terms, yes - very definitely.

There's no doubt some terms are ever more commonly used in ways they weren't in the past. "Brand" is just one of them.

Another is "commodity". There was a time when (for me at least) it meant a physical product (such as steel or maize). Nowadays it most commonly represents a point in the product lifecycle and includes service products.

Personally I don't have a problem with Biff referring to the Proteas as a brand. The top keyword association will be "the South African national cricket team", I'm sure. What it shows is that he's also aware of all the other characteristics it stands for, and to my mind that's a good thing. Perhaps Hansie wouldn't have followed the path he did if he was more "brand aware".

Proteas being a brand still worries me. I wonder if the brand could be sold? I should hope not. Just think Brazilian soccer owned by Nike!

I just have to get used to sport being a big business.

The teams already belong to the sponsors. They organise player's lives, promotional events and ads to get the maximum exposure for their brands!

Can Nike sell the brand NO not like companies sell brands like Ouma rusks. So ownership rests with?

Nike can not sell the brand, but can influence where they appear, for which charity, function or whatever. The contract would run over more than 1 year and during that time they try to dictate as much as possible, off the field though.
