    Jackie Selebi

    Well, well .....well !

This was to be expected !

Minister must provide evidence that procedure was followed in Selebi release

    20 July 2012
    Release: immediate

Today, the Minister of Correctional Services announced the release of former National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi on medical parole. Given the public’s cynicism around medical parole due to the Schabir Shaik fiasco, the Minister must give us assurance that the correct procedure has been followed.

The Correctional Services Act does allow for inmates to be released on medical parole if they are terminally ill. However, certain procedures must be followed.

Given the huge degree of public scepticism about medical parole, it is essential that the government comes entirely clean about Mr Selebi’s medical condition and the procedure that was followed in determining that he is indeed terminally ill.

There cannot be one law for the politically connected and another for the rest of us.

This is shameful and a disgrace! Convicted criminals are let off the hook just because they are friends of JZ.
    Justice gets raped again!

On the subject of Friends of JZ - it seems the National Prosecuting Authority is in contempt of court about the delivery of documents relating to their decision not to prosecute the JZ arms deal corruption case.

Makes sense, but what about the hundreds (or is it thousands?) of prisoners who are actually dying of aids and cancer that are not being released. Or are they not ANC cadres?

I heard Selebi's lawyer on the news yesterday saying the parole was unexpected and saying something about the cost. Maybe they are trying to save on dialysis cost.
I say this has a good chance of being a genuine medical parole.

Martin which system within government is perfect? We are all cynical when an ANC cadre gets special treatment that we think it is because they belong to the ANC when there may be a chance it may be legitimate.
I will be persuaded otherwise when JS plays golf with Shabir Shaik.
